A New Mantra for McLaren – Emulate Ferrari

It is a fact that Ferrari captured the market and the global attention through its popular road cars, something that even McLaren boss Ron Dennis cannot deny. Ron Dennis during the Autosport Awards revealed his company’s desire to follow Ferrari’s suit to build more road cars. He said this would mean their exclusive F1 deal with Mercedes would come to an end, but he still contemplates on his new plan.

Mclaren MP4

The McLaren boss mentioned Mercedes-Benz as one of their best partners and lauded the company for their efforts. He said McLaren has always been very clinical in choosing its partners, and believes it has made the right decision at the right time.

Dennis who received a lifetime achievement award, also said that he is delighted for the Mercedes and the Brawn GP team of the future and that they are extremely supportive of solving problems with Brawn. He also discarded the rumor that he would return to the race team next season and that his priority is now in bringing out a road car division of McLaren.

Mclaren MP4 12C

When asked about his F1 comeback, Dennis said that his role in active F1 is over, but said he would definitely be part of the sport as a spectator but never from the pit walls.

With McLaren clearly defining the new boundaries it plans to explore, we can expect to see a whole new class of McLaren sports cars in the near future. McLaren has brought out MP4-12C, the first of many from McLaren.

BMW Grand Coupe Concept Car To Enter Production

BMW Grand Coupe concept car

After months of speculation ever since the BMW Grand Coupe concept car was unveiled at the 2010 Beijing Motor Show, company’s development chief, Klaus Draege, confirmed that the car will soon enter production.

According to Autonews reports, the four-door coupe will hit the roads in 2012, soon after the debut of the new two-door 6-Series coupe and convertible next year. The Bavarian manufacturer will pitch its Grand Coupe against the likes of Mercedes-Benz CLS, the Audi A7 Sportback and the Porsche Panamera.

The production version of the car will be positioned close to the BMW 6-Series but will not steal the ’6-Series’ badging.  With the Grand Coupe, BMW aims to target the 7-Series customers who want to drive their car and don’t need a chauffeur.

The company does have a hybrid plan in mind but is yet to make the final decision for the hybrid variant of the Grand Coupe.

We are in position to bring out an additional hybrid version since we are using the same powertrain architecture as the 5, 6 or 7 series,” Draeger said.

Meanwhile, the BMW’s 6 series starts at 70,450 euros (about $93,560) in Germany. Hence expect the Grand Coupe to be priced slightly higher.

Infiniti hots up the G37

Infiniti G37 IPL
Infiniti launches the G37 IPL at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance.

In the automotive world, performance lines abound. BMW builds M cars, Mercedes-Benz offers AMG versions of its cars, and Audi puts the RS badge on a few models. Even Lexus got into the game recently with the F version of the IS model.

Among the luxury brands, only Infiniti remained immune from building tuner versions of its cars. Until now.

2011 Infiniti G37 IPL
Infiniti will put this logo on the trunk lid and engine cover.

Enter the Infiniti G37 IPL, being shown for the first time at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. The newly introduced performance brand, IPL, stands for Infiniti Performance Line, and uses, in our opinion, a very un-Infiniti-like graphic design.

As for the first car of the series, it isn't exactly an over-the-top barn-burner. Infiniti takes its standard G37 Coupe, a very fine car as it is, and retunes the engine for peak horsepower output at 7,400rpm. The base car peaks at 7,000rpm. That tuning and the addition of a performance exhaust system increases horsepower to 348, an increase of 18 over the base model.

2011 Infiniti G37 IPL
These wheels are a nice touch, and the enhanced brakes give the car stopping power.

Stiffer springs increase stability while cornering, but will sacrifice comfort when traveling over rough roads. And a new front fascia ostensibly channels air more efficiently while looking like a bad add-on body kit below the G37's grille.

However, the IPL wheels look good, and Infiniti added more-robust brakes, with four piston calipers in front and two piston calipers on the rears. A limited slip rear differential should also contribute to handling.

Infiniti also chose to make its excellent cabin tech, which includes a hard-drive-based navigation system, Bose stereo with iPod integration, and Bluetooth phone system, standard in the G37 IPL.

Road Test: 2010 Audi A5 2.0T Quattro Premium Read more

The A5's interior has a stylish setup with superior fit and finish
Brian Harper for National Post
The A5's interior has a stylish setup with superior fit and finish

As accustomed as I am to getting test vehicles that are fully loaded -- the automakers often equipping their cars and trucks in such a way as to expose us to the full suite of amenities offered in their products -- even I was gobsmacked by the $20,000-plus list of options that festooned the Audi A5 sport coupe I picked up. Now, 20-large worth of trinkets and toys on a $100,000 vehicle is one thing, but the A5 quattro Premium with six-speed manual has a considerably lower base price of $46,200. Audi Canada had increased the car's value by more than 40% or, in more understandable terms, had added the price of a compact car to the tester.

Naturally, this left me of two minds. The first was that a basic, out-of-the-box A5 2.0T is a fine car in its own right, not requiring the addition of so much factory customization. The second, and admittedly more powerful, observation was that I was driving one brash set of wheels. Speaking of which, it was $5,640 worth of 19-inch hollow-spoke black alloy wheels that truly upped the bling factor. On top of these, the coupe was also kitted with a bladed front spoiler, side sills, rear diffuser, rear bumper skirt, rear spoiler, polished exhaust trim and -- the piece de resistance -- a $144 carbon-fibre Audi Sport licence plate frame. While it might be natural to think said Audi looked like it had escaped from the Franken-tuner lab, it actually presented itself quite cohesively, without that tacked-on appearance.

Unfortunately, it was something of a paper lion. Don't hate me; I am a huge fan of the A5's base 2.0-litre, turbocharged four-cylinder. It is a creamy smooth powerplant, possessing decent oomph (211 horsepower) for its displacement and more than adequate torque (258 pound-feet) starting at a low 1,500 rpm. Thanks to a delightfully slick six-speed manual gearbox, the car accelerates smoothly --although not with the brio suggested by its looks--to 100 kilometres an hour in about eight seconds.
The 2.0L turbo's biggest flaw is a lack of snap from low engine speeds when sudden urge is called for. It will putter along contentedly in sixth gear at sub-2,000-rpm levels, being exceedingly fuel efficient while doing so, but it's not going to take off like a scared rabbit if you need to boot it -- a couple of downshifts are definitely called for. So, for the sake of keeping up with the tester's muscular appearance, it needs the optional 3.2L V6 to put go to the show. Actually, it deserves the S5's 354-hp 4.2L V8.
On the upside, highway fuel economy for the A5 is positively parsimonious. I was averaging 6.6 litres per 100 kilometres while cruising the flat sections of the Macdonald-Cartier at 110 to 115 km/h. Overall fuel economy for a week combining highway and city use was 9.9 litres of premium unleaded for every 100 km, not bad for a car that tips the scales at 1,700 kilograms (and considering how often I was leaning on the throttle).

Much like the A4 2.0T quattro I had tested earlier, the A5's handling and ride are well above par, with a nod to the $2,500 Audi Drive select option. This includes the Dynamic Steering System and Adaptive Suspension Damping System, among other things, which sharpen both the Servotronic speed-sensitive steering and the sport suspension -- five-link front and trapezoidal-link rear with stabilizer bars at both ends. The coupe tracked straight and true on curvy bits of tarmac, while on-ramps and off-ramps were approached with abandon, knowing the car would remain rock-steady.
Given the A5's fastback body style compromises visibility toward the rear of the car, the Side Assist portion of the $2,200 Technology Package (which also includes push-button start, keyless opening, HomeLink and adaptive headlights) proved its worth. Sensors determine if there are vehicles in the Audi's blind spots and signal through lights mounted in the door mirrors. It's a tad distracting in heavy traffic until you get used to it.

Again, like the A4, the A5's cabin setup is stylish, attractive and designed to accommodate serious seat time behind the wheel. Kudos to the firm and supportive front seats, which kept me fatigue-free even after long hours of driving. As with the A4, there's a bounty of headroom and legroom for those more than six feet tall. Unlike the sedan, however, the A5's rear-seat area is best used sparingly, unless the occupants are of shorter stature.

The rest of the interior is suitably upscale, as is Audi's wont: superior fit and finish, controls that fall to hand and more than a fair share of mod-cons and the latest electronic trickery.
Any disappointment I have about the A5's performance is directly related to the tester's appearance. A car with that level of macho had better scorch the Earth with brawn to match. In milder and less expensive form, the A5 and its turbo four bring an air of breezy sophistication to the coupe segment. Anyone, especially those who are in post-soccer-parent mode, should put it on their "must consider" list.

Lotus has taken four of the classic colour schemes used by Lotus in the 1960s (Elite Yellow, Carbon Grey, Sky Blue and Old English White) and combined them with exclusive Club Racer interior design features to give a stunning sportscar that beautifully morphs function and form.

The firm and supportive Elise seats are clad with lightweight microfibre comfort pads perfectly positioned to give the right amount of support with the minimal amount of weight, but still keeping the body coloured seat shell partly exposed.

The exterior body colour theme is carried over to the transmission tunnel and combined with silver and black paint highlights, bisecting the cockpit and tying together the whole sporty theme unique to the Club Racer.

Other exclusive interior design features of the Club Racer are the anthracite anodised gear knob and handbrake sleeve, the Club Racer (CR) logo hand embroidered on the seat headrest and the unique anodized aluminium flooring in the driver’s and passenger’s footwell. The small 320 mm diameter leather rimmed steering wheel has an on-center marker, enabling the more spirited driver to quickly and safely identify the straight ahead position of the front wheels.

Luke Bennett, Director of Lotus Cars said, “Special Editions of the award winning Elise have always proved popular with our customers around the world, and I expect the Elise Club Racer to be no different. We have taken colour schemes from our past, used on the Elite and Elan in the 1960s and cleverly brought them up to date with a modern feel to the interior. The whole design package is modern with a classic twist, which of course matches the peerless ride and handling of a Lotus and the convertible experience of the Elise perfectly.”

Now the German tuner has taken the Gallardo LP560-4 and given it what it likes to call a little “added spice”. The output of the Italian supercar has been bumped to an even 600 horsepower thanks to a new stainless steel exhaust system and an ECU tune, resulting in a claimed top speed of 211 mph. Other upgrades include an adjustable sport suspension system, 19-inch three-piece wheels, and a new front spoiler lip. You can read more details in the press release after the jump and check out the high-res gallery of photos below.

The new stainless steel high-performance exhaust system with butterfly valves is an attractive proposition. Not only is the sound level adjustable via remote, the exhaust also frees up 15 horsepower and lets the driver enjoy a whole new aural experience. As a welcome side effect, the edo exhaust system weighs 12 kg (26 lb) less than the original piece.

The supercar is equipped with a new stainless steel high-performance exhaust system with butterfly valves that frees up 15 hp. The exhaust system weights at 12 kg (26 lb) and its sound level can be adjusted via a remote. The suspension system meanwhile has been upgraded to a sport suspension system which is adjustable in compression and rebound damping. The edo Competition stands on 19-inch three-piece racing wheels with artificially-aged cast center-sections, hand-polished outer rims and 39 stainless steel screws. The wheels are wrapped with Dunlop Sport Maxx tires measuring at 235/35 ZR 19 at the front and 305/30 ZR 19 at the rear.

D3 Cadillac, the leader in Cadillac tuning, introduces the new 2008 Cadillac CTS Performance Exterior Package. The exterior enhancements are not only exquisitely designed styling cues integrated seamlessly, they are functional as well. The front grill has a unique jewel like cut on the stainless steel wire mesh that signifies performance & class. The additional openings in the front allow for a larger surface area to induce adequate cooling for the engine compartment.

2008 D3 Cadillac CTS - Side View
2008 D3 Cadillac CTS - Side View

This is important when you start squeezing more performance out of this engine, as heat is a byproduct of making more power. Not only were the factory brake ducts maintained, but the front fascia also introduces double the cooling by adding an additional brake duct pick ups on each side. Notice the angled lip towards the lower edge of the front fascia. This angled edge has been designed and measured for just the right amount of down force without creating too much drag.

2008 D3 Cadillac CTS - Rear Side
2008 D3 Cadillac CTS - Rear Side
The side skirts offer a much more complete look and help transfer the styling from the front of the vehicle to the rear without loosing the theme of the design. The rear deck lid spoiler and rear roof spoiler help introduce down force at high speed while keeping the air stable coming off the backside of the vehicle. The rear lower diffuser helps keep the air uniform while passing the underside of the vehicle. While at speed the air is kept moving uniform rather than curling up behind the vehicle, often promoting rear end lift at high speeds.

2010 Audi A8 details and Australian release

Audi has released official information on the next generation flagship limousine, the Audi A8. It showcases an all-new aluminium body – know as Audi Space Frame which weighs 40 percent less than conventional structures – a revised 4.2-litre V8 – boasting more power and torque whilst consuming less fuel – and a Multi Media Interface system – using touch screen character recognition.

The new A8 will sport an all-new 8-speed automatic transmission, too, which is said to dramatically improve fuel efficiency. Speaking of fuel consumption, the new A8 uses 21 percent less fuel than the previous model using the same engine. The 273-kilowatt V8 (up from 246kW) produces 445Nm of torque (up from 430Nm) and is said to consume an average of just 9.5L/100km (bettering the previous model’s 12L/100km).

Inside, the luxury barge is loaded full of pampering goodies. The highlight though is the MMI system. This interface allows the driver to draw numbers, letters and characters onto a pad and the system will automatically recognise the commands. Audi has said even if the user isn’t the neatest of writers (useful incentive to all the doctors out there) the system has no trouble recognising locations punched into the navigation system, for example.

Other gizmos include a night vision display that highlights pedestrians and other moving objects in low-light areas. The engine is also connected up to a Stop and Go system which switches the engine off when the car is stationary. The system then fires the engine back into life upon acceleration without hesitation, adding to that improved fuel economy.

Uwe Hagen, managing director Audi Australia, spoke of the Australian release in a recent report,
“The all new Audi A8 is the most-important model we will launch in 2010 in terms of driving our prestige image upwards thanks to its aspirational value, unparalleled quality and excellent level of specification.”
The official market launch of the new Audi A8 isn’t until September, unfortunately. The debut model will be the 4.2-litre variant referred to in the above information, which will be priced at $225,904. A turbo-diesel 3.0-litre variant will also follow later this year showcasing a 184kW V6, that is said to consume just 6.6L/100km. A turbo-diesel 4.2-litre V8 will also be presented in early 2011.

Look out for our full review of the new Audi A8 in the very near future for further information and a comprehensive interpretation.

Ford Fiesta Pre-Launch Malaysia – Hatchback overview

Ford Fiesta 1.6

Ford Malaysia has pre-launch their all-new Ford Fiesta which in somewhat coming in 3rd quarter this year. These picture which was taken awhile ago in Sunway Pyramid. This was the first time Ford Fiesta shown to Malaysia in public.

Ford Fiesta Hatchback Red

Ford Malaysia decided to show the more sporty Ford Fiesta to Malaysian first. However there will be a sedan version that will be shown later this year. Our sources also told us, there will be another preview of Ford Fiesta tomorrow in 1utama tomorrow 7th April to 11th April – but we are not sure whether the sedan version will be shown too. With a estimate pricing  from RM75,000 to RM85,000. The Ford Fiesta that will be launch soon here definitely it’s an attractive bargain.

Ford Fiesta Rear Bumper

The Ford Fiesta it’s fully imported – a CBU ( Complete Built-Up) unit from Thailand. Ford Fiesta Hatchback here as shown, has a few sporty element. While others would call their car as aerodynamically design, Ford would say this Ford Fiesta is Kinetic Design. Do check out the rear diffuser on the bumper and the rear spoiler.

Ford Fiesta Bumper

While Mazda choose to go with smiley front fascia, Ford which is closely related to Mazda, decide to go the other way round for the front fascia. You be able to notice there are also a lower spoiler lip for the bumper with bodykit on the Ford Fiesta hatchback. Foglights will be available only on the Ford Fiesta 5-door sport.

Ford Fiesta Dashboard

Ford as an American brand, are not so “daring” in terms of designing their cars. In my opinion, their designs somewhat sits between the European design and Japanese designs. There will be 2 air-bags but based on specification it will only be available in the 5 door hatchback version of Ford Fiesta. Steering is not leather but it has standard audio controls.

Ford Fiesta Gear Aircon

Ford Fiesta comes in 2 engine, a 1.6L Duratec Ti-VCT paired with a 6-speed automatic dual-clutch Powershift and 1.4L Duratec, 5-speed manual. The 1.6 engine produces 120Ps @ 6000rpm while the 1.4 produces 96Ps. More goodies on the Ford Fiesta hatchback – there will be USB Connectivity and Bluetooth, only with the hatchback as stated.

Ford Fiesta Interior Malaysia

This particular Ford Fiesta unit here it’s wrap with leather seats. But based on the estimate spec we receive it will be frabric, our guess is this could be an optional.

Ford Fiesta Rim Malaysia

The Ford Fiesta comes in front discbrake and rear drum brakes. 15″ rims for the 1.6 sedan and 16″ rims for the 1.6 hatchback. The 1.6 hatchback also comes with sport suspension. Ford Fiesta also comes with ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) as standard. While only the top of the range Ford Fiesta Hatchback will receive Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) and Traction Control System (TCS).

Ford Feista Door

The Ford Fiesta also comes with Electronic Side Mirror control and6 speaker. Notice, that there’s a tweeter place in the door handle area, as comment from a fastmotoring fan “normally we don’t see other cars put tweeter there”.

Ford Fiesta Boot Malaysia

The boot space of the Ford Fiesta hatchback is adequate just like a typical hatchback car.

Ford Fiesta Seat

The rear leg room of the Ford Fiesta is decent, much like what we get from the same range of vehicle like Mazda 2,Toyota Yaris.

Ford Fiesta Back Door

The rear door of the Ford Fiesta hatchback.

Ford Fiesta Side Signal

The side mirror is attached on the car door panel.

Ford Fiesta Window Malaysia

The Ford Fiesta hatchback is attached with door visor.

As overall, we thinks that the Ford Fiesta is a quite a good bargain especially the hatchback version, judging on the specification information we receive. There are much more goodies which is only available in the hatchback version. The Ford Fiesta won many awards from countries all over the world. Many Malaysians would think about the resell value of Ford, however i believe with this Ford Fiesta in Malaysia with such a attractive price, it will at least change of some views.

I apologize for the some of the blurry photos as my usual camera was out of battery. Do check out our gallery below for some of the more detail shots and angle.

Lexus made its name building luxury cars that compare well with offerings from high-end European brands, usually at a significantly lower price. The ES 350, even though at the lower end of the Lexus lineup, keeps that luxury trait alive. The sole purpose of the car is to pamper its passengers.
To that end, its automatic features, including adaptive cruise control, take care of the simpler tasks. Navigation and the Bluetooth phone system make for practical cabin tech features, and the Mark Levinson audio system treats the car's occupants to excellent sound quality.

Press Release:
Since its introduction four years ago, the German-bred Catera has remained one of the top conquest vehicles within General Motors. In fact, Catera has consistently achieved conquest rates of approximately 40 percent since its appearance in 1996, and wears the crown as top conquest for the Cadillac division.

Catera received noteworthy reviews for 2000 with its freshened interior and exterior appearance and new and improved Sport package, which earned the vehicle an overall satisfaction rate of 3.43, out of a possible four (source: ICE, Q1, 2000MY). Catera ranked higher than its domestic competitor, the Lincoln LS-6.

For 2001, Catera offers new services from OnStar, which is standard on all Cadillac models and includes one-year of free premium service. Mounted near the rearview mirror assembly, the integrated three-button communications system offers a 24-hour-a-day, 365 days-a-year comprehensive safety, security and convenience service at the touch of a button.

OnStar adds personal calling and Virtual Advisor to its core service, giving consumers access to personalized Internet data such as news headlines, sports scores, stock quotes and e-mail in a hands-free fashion. In keeping with Cadillac’s philosophy of ‘eyes on the road, hands on the wheel,’ drivers simply use voice commands to download their desired information.

‘Motorists spend about 500 million hours a week in their vehicles,’ said Jay Spenchian, Catera brand manager. ‘These new features and services can help make those hours more productive and entertaining. With wireless and satellite technology that allows the convergence of functionality in the vehicle, Cadillac and OnStar are extending their technology leadership and GM’s core business.’

Catera Sport Makes Modifications
Catera also made some mid-cycle enhancements in 2000 to its Sport package in response to customer and dealer feedback. The ten-way manual adjustable driver and passenger seats on Catera Sport have been replaced with the standard Catera eight-way power seat. Three-position memory was also added to the driver seat.

‘Our mid-cycle driver seat change is an example of listening and understanding our dealers and Catera owners – simply put, they wanted power seats,’ said Spenchian.

Renowned for its handling, performance and suspension, the ’01 Catera gets vented rear disc brakes, resulting in better braking performance.

The Sport package for ’01 remains the same, offering 17-inch aluminum wheels, high-intensity discharge (HID) headlights, matte-silver chrome grille and brushed-silver aluminum interior trim, ZJ1 suspension, heated seats, rear deck spoiler, theft deterrent system and universal garage door opener.

Exterior
Catera for 2001 continues its decidedly European style, with crisp exterior lines and curves that are more tailored to flatter the body.

The Catera receives a new headlamp and Solar Reflect – a protection that reduces the interior temperature at the IP level on a hot day by 18 degrees Fahrenheit (10 degrees Celsius.)
Catera also gets vented rear brake discs, which makes the rear brakes last longer and hold up under stressful braking conditions.

Cadillac offers a pallete of eight exterior colors: Ebony, Ivory, Sage, Sand, Cranberry, Platinum, Sapphire and Rainforest.

The Sport is again available in three colors – Ebony, Ivory and Platinum.

Interior
Stone leather replaces Charcoal leather for the Sport interior.
Catera interiors are available in Neutral, Charcoal and Stone.
Bose® Entertainment System

This premium system features eight acoustically located speakers with two sub-woofers in the rear package shelf for rich, full-sounding music reproduction. The system provides a National Weather Service channel for immediate weather updates. In addition, radio data system (RDS) technology permits scanning for a particular style of music, listening to traffic and stock reports as well as receiving information such as radio station call letters and format, song titles and artists’ names.
Catera is equipped with a standard AM stereo/FM stereo cassette audio system and eight speakers.

Lighting
Standard convenience lighting features include illuminated entry, time-delay interior lighting, illuminated vanity mirrors and glove box, adjustable map lights and rear reading lights.

Powertrain Engine
Every 2001 Catera is powered by a 3.0-liter, dual-overhead camshaft V6 engine. The engine produces 200 horsepower at 6000 rpm and 192 lb.-ft. of torque at 3400 rpm to the rear-wheel-propelled drivetrain.

The iron-block, aluminum-head engine is equipped with an efficient and reliable high-energy ignition system. A multi-ram induction system delivers a smooth, consistent flow of air to the intake valves, while sodium powder-filled exhaust valves dissipate heat from the combustion chamber. The combination of more efficient airflow and denser air-fuel mixtures means power on demand across the rpm band. A dual, stainless steel exhaust system also contributes to engine breathing efficiency.
A two-piece propeller shaft connects the powertrain to the rear differential. This balanced design is engineered for improved smoothness.

The induction system and valvetrain assembly enable the Catera powertrain to provide a balance of low-speed efficiency, spirited performance, fuel efficiency and a low-emissions vehicle (LEV) classification.

Transmission
An electronically controlled four-speed automatic transmission with overdrive is designed to deliver smooth off-the-line acceleration, quiet cruising and on-demand passing power. The driver can select between three modes of shift operation: normal, sport and winter. The normal setting is for everyday driving. The sport setting makes for more aggressive shifts and adds more engine braking. The winter mode offers third-gear starts in slippery conditions.

All 2001 Cateras are equipped with a stand-alone oil-to-air transmission oil cooler for improved engine cooling and air conditioning efficiency.

Chassis Suspension
The four-wheel independent suspension includes front and rear coil springs with MacPherson struts and advanced hydraulic control arm bushings. The multi-link trailing arm design of the rear suspension is tuned for secure, predictable handling. The rear suspension also features automatic load leveling for improved stability and full suspension travel under varying load conditions.

The damper valving of Catera’s fixed-calibration, gas-pressurized struts has been revised to deliver more body and wheel control without sacrificing ride quality.

Brakes
In keeping with its German sport-sedan pedigree, all Cateras are equipped with dual-circuit, four-wheel disc brakes and a Bosch-designed ABS/ASR 5.3 anti-lock and traction control system. The traction control system keeps the engine from overpowering the tires on wet and slippery road surfaces and provides brake control for the two rear wheels. Then, when necessary, the system transfers drive torque to the wheel with the most traction.

Steering
Catera’s speed-sensitive steering gear calibration is designed to handle low-speed driving and parking maneuvers as well as spirited driving and highway cruising.

Wheels and Tires
The 2001 Catera wears five-spoke, 16-inch aluminum wheels mated to Goodyear Eagle RS P225/55R16 H-rated tires. Catera Sport is equipped with five-spoke, 17-inch aluminum wheels and P235/45R17 H-rated Goodyear Mud and Snow rubber.

Safety and Security
The Catera is equipped with an outstanding array of safety and security features designed to help the driver keep eyes on the road and hands on the wheel.
OnStar’s unique three-button system is standard on the ’01 Catera and includes one year of premium service free.

Cadillac drivers will also be able to stay connected in two new ways – through OnStar’s new Personal Calling capability and the OnStar Virtual Advisor.

New Services from OnStar
In 1997, Cadillac became the first vehicle in the world to offer the myriad safety and security benefits of OnStar, the clearly recognized leader in telematics. In 2000, Cadillac made OnStar standard in each of its models. For 2001, OnStar will offer two additional services: Personal Calling, which allows drivers to make and receive hands-free, voice-activated personal calls from their vehicles without an additional cellular contract; and OnStar Virtual Advisor, which will deliver to the vehicle personalized Internet-based information such as news headlines, sports scores, stock quotes and weather conditions. Both services will be available through OnStar’s three-button system, which is mounted near the rearview mirror assembly and offers completely hands-free operation.

OnStar is a 24-hour-a-day, 365-days-a-year comprehensive mobile communications system that brings together sophisticated global positioning system (GPS) satellite technology, Cadillac’s advanced on-board electronics, the cellular telephone network and the OnStar Center adviser network.

OnStar’s combination of safety, security and convenience services includes route support, remote door unlock, theft detection notification, stolen vehicle tracking, emergency services, OnStar MED-NET, AccidentAssist, and remote diagnostics. From a database of more than five million listings, OnStar advisers can also provide a wide range of convenience services, such as providing the driver the location of the nearest automatic teller machine (ATM), making hotel and restaurant reservations, or ordering flowers. Should any air bag deploy, the OnStar system automatically notifies the OnStar Center so emergency services can be dispatched to the scene if necessary.

Front and Side Air Bags
The 2001 Catera is equipped with driver and passenger front air bags and side-impact air bags for front seat passengers. The side-impact air bags deploy from the outer edge of the front seat bolster. The driver front air bag is located in the steering wheel center hub. The passenger front air bag deploys from the instrument panel. In the event of an air bag deployment, the interior lights will illuminate and the doors are automatically unlocked after 15 seconds.

All five occupants wear three-point safety belts – the four outboard seat positions feature a five-position height adjustment for maximum fit and comfort. Catera’s front seats feature safety belt pretensioners and web locks. In the event of a collision, they are activated by the air bag sensor system to tighten both lap and shoulder belts and keep occupants firmly in position.

Cateras Feature Child Seat Tethers
All 2001 Cateras feature upper rear child seat tethers for improved child safety. In fact, all three rear seats are equipped with the child seat tethers. In addition, all passenger safety seats are equipped with a cinching function and web lock to secure safety seats in place.

All four outboard seating positions include an extended-height head restraint that is taller than conventional pillow-type designs for head and neck protection.

Other Features
Catera’s body structure and safety cage are specifically engineered to absorb and distribute impact energy in a collision. In the event of a severe collision, the front and rear sections deform in a controlled manner to absorb the impact and dissipate force. Dual steel bar reinforcements are located inside each occupant door.

Standard security features include remote keyless entry, programmable door locks, coded key theft-deterrent system and perimeter lighting. The latter is designed to create a more secure environment around the vehicle by keeping the low-beam headlights and parking lights lit for 20 seconds after it is unlocked with the remote keyless entry fob. If desired, an authorized Catera dealer can disable the perimeter lighting feature.

Should the key be inadvertently left in the ignition, a lockout feature prevents the doorrom locking via the power lock switch or remote keyless entry fob.

The four standard express power windows and the optional sunroof are equipped with a pinch-guard feature. When the system senses resistance to closure (like fingers), glass travel is immediately reversed.

Precipitation can quickly translate into reduced visibility for any driver. For added safety and convenience, the Catera’s headlights are automatically activated when the windshield wipers are on at least 20 seconds. The standard Twilight Sentinel system automatically turns on the exterior lights to full intensity in low-light conditions.

Ownership and Warranty
All 2001 Cadillacs are backed by a four-year/50,000-mile (whichever comes first) bumper-to-bumper limited warranty with courtesy transportation for all warranty repairs and no deductible. The warranty also includes defects in the material and workmanship of tires. Additional coverage includes a six-year/100,000-mile (whichever comes first) rust-through protection.

Cadillac 24-hour roadside assistance is available to Cadillac owners toll-free by dialing 1-800-882-1112. Cadillac-trained service technicians are dispatched to handle minor repairs and assist with flat tires, lockouts, jump starts, fuel deliveries and other roadside emergencies. If the repair cannot be completed on the spot, the technician can arrange to have the vehicle transported to a dealership and customers driven to their home or other local destination. Roadside assistance is provided at no charge for any warranty repair and at a nominal charge if the vehicle is not under warranty.
